The Hector P. Garcia Middle School Beginner Band is the starting point for all band students. The beginner band is comprised mostly of 6th graders with a few 7th graders. All band students that are in the Varsity Band or Non-Varsity Band spent their first year learning how to play their instrument in the Beginner Band. Beginners spend their time in homogenous beginner classes (i.e. flute class, clarinet class, trumpet class, etc.). By Christmastime, students are able to perform elementary band works and combine with the other beginner classes to form the Beginner Band. By the time spring comes, the beginner band competes annually at the Sandy Lake Band Festival and has earned 1st division ratings for many consecutive years!
During students' 5th grade year, band directors from Garcia MS come visit elementary schools to discuss joining band with 5th graders - the Varsity band also performs concerts at each of our elementary campuses (Botello, Bowie, Hogg, Peeler, Regan). Students sign-up to join band in 5th grade and choose either Woodwinds, Brass, or Percussion. Once students arrive for their 6th grade year at Garcia, they are screened for instrument placement their first week of school. Percussion students that do not pass the percussion aptitudes screening will be given the opportunity to play a different instrument.
All band students are furnished instruments and all needed accessories, supplies, and books.
Beginner Students can choose from the following instruments:
